The Rolling Stones are undoubtedly one of the most influential and important Rock and Roll bands of all time. They have been around for over 60 years, despite all the ups and downs they have faced. One of the most devastating things that happened to the band was the loss of their drummer, Charlie Watts, in 2021 due to health issues. However, despite this loss, the band is still marching ahead at an astounding speed. Last month, they released their 24th studio album; it features old recordings from Watts and contributions of other famous artists.
On Oct. 20th, the Rolling Stones released their first album of original songs in almost two decades: Hackney Diamonds. The album features 12 tracks written by the iconic song-writing duo, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, along with one cover song. The album was produced by Andrew Watt, who has worked with huge names including Post Malone, Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, and even Elton John. His work on Hackney Diamonds is notable as well, as the tracks are amazing, especially considering that both Jagger and Richards are 80 and guitarist Ronny Wood is not far behind at 75. You may have heard one of the tracks on TSN while watching sports games as the band has decided to collaborate with the MLB to promote their new album. This track is called “Angry,” and it has the classic ‘stonesy’ sound, with memorable guitar riffs from Richards, solid drumbeats, and the energetic smug vocals of Mick Jagger. It is a great Rock song that has already had success, making the 34th spot on the charts after its release. It also has a great music video, featuring the sunset strip in LA with animated Stones-themed billboards. Another notable track is “The Sweet Sounds of Heaven.” This one is more of a soulful bluesy tune, which features vocals from Lady Gaga and piano from Stevie Wonder. It is very powerful and is played with much emotion. The album’s closing track is none other than “Rolling Stone Blues,” a Muddy Waters classic blues tune that inspired the name for the band when they began. Ending the album this way could suggest that this is their final album as a way of finishing in the same place they started.
Apart from Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder, the album includes many other famous musicians, including past members of the Rolling Stones. One important musician the Stones brought in to record with was Paul McCartney of The Beatles. He was recorded on the track “Bite my Head Off.” Additionally, Elton John plays piano on two tracks: “Get Close” and “Live by the Sword.” On top of these musicians, former Stones members are also featured on the album. Their recently deceased drummer Charlie Watts played on two tracks: “Mess it Up” and “Live by the Sword” which surprisingly also features their former bassist Bill Wyman who left the band in 1993. This is a trip down memory lane for listeners who cherish past Stones records.
Hackney Diamonds is a great album that highlights the timelessness of the Rolling Stones along with the many artists the album also features. If it is their last album, it is a great way to finish their legacy.
